The main active ingredients in the product are Boswellic Acid and 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid or AKBA. Boswellia Serrata Extract contains about 9.68% β-Boswellic acid. Its AKBA content is about 7.0% in its resin and 1.37% in its epidermis.

AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid)

AKBA is a triterpenoid compound found in Boswellia serrata, Boswellia papyrifera, and Boswellia sacra. It is described as having CAS number 67416-61-9, molecular formula of C32H48O5, and molecular weight of 512.7 g/mol.

The compound AKBA in Boswellia serrata is proven to possess powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Hence, it is useful for several inflammatory health conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory system, and the musculoskeletal system.

The most common form of the compound is standardized 30% AKBA powder.

Boswellic Acid

Boswellic Acid is another main ingredient of Boswellia serrata. It is also found in Cyclocarya paliurus and other herbs. The CAS number of the compound is 631-69-6 and its molecular formula is C30H48O3. The molecular weight of the Boswellic Acid is 456.7 g/mol.

According to studies, Boswellic Acids are very beneficial in inhibiting cancer cell growth. It is shown to limit the spread of cancer cells and prevent certain enzymes in the body from destroying the DNA of normal cells.

The product is available in the form of Standardized 65% Boswellic Acid powder.

Boswellic acid vs AKBA

Both Boswellic Acid and AKBA are known to contribute to many benefits associated with the use of Boswellia extract. While the benefits of AKBA mainly revolve around its anti-inflammatory properties, Boswellic Acid is known for its anti-cancer properties.

Boswellia and Turmeric

Turmeric is another powerful anti-inflammatory product that is used in the management of various joint inflammatory conditions. In one study, it was concluded that the combination of Boswellia and Turmeric can make treatment for osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions more effective than the products on their own.

Boswellia with Bioperine

Bioperine is a patented black pepper extract proven to enhance the absorption of the main compounds in a product. Based on studies, adding Bioperine to Boswellia Extract may enhance absorption and increased the bioavailability of the active ingredients of the product. Thus, the combination of the said products is recommended.

How does Boswellia Extract work?

Experts say that Boswellia Extract helps control inflammation by influencing the release of certain enzymes responsible for inflammatory reactions such as muscle contraction. The product helps reduce the production of leukotrienes which causes contraction of bronchial muscles during asthmatic attacks. This same mechanism is believed to apply in the action of Boswellia Extract in joint inflammatory conditions.
