What Is Horseradish Extract?

Horseradish is a mustard family member known for its intense aroma and spicy flavor; it offers potential health benefits, including fighting cancer, infections, and respiratory issues. It is often used as a condiment and adds a flavorful kick to various dishes.

Native to southern Russia and eastern Ukraine, this herbaceous perennial features clumped leaves and a large, fleshy taproot, typically white to tan in color and reaching lengths up to a foot.

With a history dating back centuries, horseradish has been valued for its “energetically hot” properties, providing relief from winter ailments and digestive support. Culinary records trace its use as a condiment back to the 1600s.

Crafted in small batches using fresh, organic roots and certified organic alcohol, Nutri Avenue’s horseradish extract boasts a robust, earthy flavor profile. Ideal for enhancing homemade fire ciders, salad dressings, and vinegars, it’s perfect for recipes calling for hot, spicy, and warming herbs. Enjoy the zesty taste and potential health benefits of horseradish extract in your favorite dishes.

Active Ingredient in Horseradish Extract

The active ingredient in horseradish extract is allyl isothiocyanate (AITC). This compound is responsible for the pungent aroma and spicy flavor of horseradish. It possesses remarkable antioxidant properties and is present in the plant’s essential oil, typically ranging from 0.2% to 1.0%. Allyl isothiocyanate acts as a potent chemical irritant, similar to capsaicin found in tear gas and pepper spray. It stimulates chemical receptors in various parts of the body, including the mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, face, and eyes. This natural defense mechanism serves to deter pests, ensuring the protection of the horseradish root.

General Horseradish Extract Powder Production Process

Step 1: To make the supplement ingredient powder, you must obtain bright horseradish.

Step 2: Clean it thoroughly, wash it with clean water.

Step 3: Dry it with a clean towel.

Step 4: Cut it into a small piece.

Step 5: Then, put it into a pulverizer and crush it (100 kilograms). Add precisely 200 kg of water during the crushing process. The fineness after the pulverization should not be less than 15 orders.

Step 6: Here comes the cooling, pour the horseradish mash into a single flash still and distill it at a temperature of 105 ℃ for exactly 30 minutes. Ensure that the gauge pressure in the still kettle is 0.5 normal atmosphere. Collect the overhead products through the water-cooled cooling system in the still kettle. Follow these steps assertively to achieve the desired result. When collecting overhead product, a single flash enters the second distillation still, where it undergoes a second distillation process.

Step 7:  The distillation process happens at a temperature of 115 ℃ for a minimum of 20 minutes, with a gauge pressure of 0.4 normal atmosphere in the still kettle. The process distills out cut and collects the product through a water-cooling system cooling. The thick horseradish oil collected during the second distillation process requires special care.

Step 8: The horse radish oil is then stirred for several minutes and isolated with purified product for 10 minutes. After the silica gel has absorbed moisture, it can be recycled after drying regeneration.

Step 9: Here comes refining, using silica gel adsorption refining, silica gel is added to the separator.

Step 10: After the silica gel has absorbed moisture, drying regeneration comes next.

Step 11: Lastly, the Horseradish Extract Powder is being packed and ready for distribution.
