What Is Kaempferol Mechanism?

It is a flavonoid compound with multiple pharmacological effects. According to the reference materials provided, the mechanism of action of kaempferol can be summarized as follows.

Anti-cancer and anti-cancer. It can reduce the risk of cancer, especially the recurrence of pancreatic cancer and colorectal adenoma. It can also prevent and treat childhood medulloblastoma by inhibiting hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor tyrosine-protein kinase.

Anti-infection and anti-inflammatory. It has antibacterial activity and is effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In terms of antiviral, flavonol can inhibit viruses at non-cytotoxic concentrations. In terms of anti-inflammatory, it achieves anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory factors.

Prevention and treatment of diabetes. It can inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), reduce the expression of CD36 protein on the surface of macrophages, and prevent cells from taking up oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). And prevent the occurrence of atherosclerosis. In addition, kaempferol increases glucose uptake by 3T3-L1 cells and may become a new generation of insulin sensitizers.

Antioxidant effect. It can activate the expression of antioxidant enzymes such as heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and inhibit the production of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and nitric oxide (NO). It protects cells from oxidative stress damage.

Anticancer function and mechanism of action. It can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells and induce apoptosis of cancer cells. Its mechanisms include inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, promoting cancer cell apoptosis, regulating cell cycle, inhibiting angiogenesis, inhibiting tumor metastasis, etc.

Anti-inflammatory activity. It exerts anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes and the expression of inflammatory mediators.

Atherosclerosis prevention and treatment function. It prevents the occurrence of atherosclerosis by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammatory response.

Osteoporosis prevention and treatment function. It can activate the activity of estrogen receptors, promote osteoblast proliferation, improve osteoblasts’ differentiation and mineralization ability, and have a therapeutic effect on osteoporosis.

Other functional activities. Kaempferol also has antibacterial effects and can inhibit a variety of human pathogens. It also shows therapeutic effects in relieving cough, treating cataracts, inhibiting fertility, and anti-epileptic, antispasmodic, anti-ulcer, and choleretic and diuretic effects.

Myricetin VS Kaempferol

Myricetin (MYR) and Kaempferol (Kae) are two different flavonoids. They share some structure and function similarities but also have unique properties and biological activities.

First, both belong to the class of flavonoids. They have similar basic chemical structures, i.e., a central heterocyclic ring (C ring) containing two benzene rings (A ring and B ring) connected by three carbon atoms. However, they differ in the hydroxyl substitution pattern. Myricetin usually has a hydroxyl substitution at the 3′ position. Kae has a hydroxyl substitution at the three positions, which affects their chemical properties and biological activities.

Second, both ingredients have a variety of biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, and cardiovascular protection. However, according to the latest research, Myricetin has a wider range of applications in regulating immune response, inhibiting cytokine storms, improving cardiac function, promoting antiviral potential, etc.

In addition, Myricetin exerts its therapeutic effects by regulating multiple signaling pathways, such as Hippo, MAPK, GSK-3β, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, STAT3, TLR, IκB/NF-κB, Nrf2/HO-1, etc. In addition, it also enhances immunomodulatory function. It may serve as an adjuvant treatment for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurological diseases and may be a potential drug for COVID-19 and other viral infections.

In contrast, although Kaempferol also has multiple health benefits. However, in some aspects, the research may not be as in-depth as Myricetin.

In general, they are all important flavonoids with multiple health benefits. However, they differ in chemical structure and biological activity. It leads to differences in their pharmacological mechanisms of action and clinical application prospects.

Is Kaempferol The Same As Quercetin?

No, they are not. Even though both ingredients are flavonoids and are a type of plant pigment, their chemical structures and properties differ.

Kaempferol is a flavonol. Its structure has three hydroxyl groups attached to the first carbon of the A ring and one hydroxyl group attached to the fourth carbon of the B ring. It is known for its antioxidant properties in many fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods.

Quercetin is also a flavonol. However, it has a slightly different structure, with the hydroxyl group on the B ring attached to the third carbon instead of the fourth. It is one of the most common flavonoids in the human diet and is known for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Kaempferol Factory: How To Manufacture It?

  • Alkali extraction. After the raw material containing kaempferol is crushed, 1-2% sodium hydroxide solution is added to dissolve it. Then, it is heated in a boiling water bath for extraction and filtered after cooling to obtain a filtrate.
  • Enzymatic hydrolysis. The filtrate is acidified to pH 5-7, 0.5-1% enzyme (such as amylase, cellulase, or β-glucosidase, etc.) is added, and hydrolysis is carried out at 40-50°C for 15-20 hours to obtain a hydrolyzate.
  • Extraction. The hydrolyzate is concentrated to 1/10 to 1/15 of the original volume, and ethyl acetate is added for stirring extraction. Then, the ethyl acetate is recovered by decompression to obtain an extract.
  • Recrystallization. The extract is recrystallized thrice using 80-95% methanol to finally obtain a yellow needle-shaped crystalline kaempferol product.

The advantages of this method are a simple process, high raw material utilization rate, and low production cost. The purity of kaempferol can reach more than 90%, and the yield is greater than 80%, which is suitable for industrial production.
