BASF Plant Officially Announces Explosion!
BASF SE, formerly known as Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik, is the world’s largest chemical producer with its headquarters in Ludwigshafen.
On July 29, 2024, an explosion and subsequent fire occurred at the BASF plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany. A leak of organic solvents caused the explosion and subsequent fire. The plant was immediately closed and is now safe. After extensive inspections, BASF’s environmental monitoring department confirmed that the incident did not contaminate any air, water, or soil.
The incident could have a significant impact on the global feed market, with the potential to disrupt the supply of vitamins A and E. The affected plant area is essential for the production of precursors for the synthesis of carotenoids and vitamins.
Regarding production, BASF plant said delays or interruptions could affect products in the vitamin E and vitamin A value chains and related carotenoids. However, the production of core aroma ingredients (including citral, citronellol, linalool, geraniol, lilyal, and their derivatives) continues. Some selected aroma ingredient products may still be delayed or interrupted.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar incident in October 2017. At the time, a fire at BASF’s northern citral plant in Ludwigshafen caused the plant to shut down and resulted in force majeure declared for citral and prenol-based flavor products. That shutdown and simultaneous supply disruptions in China led to a sharp increase in vitamin A and E prices, driving market innovation for alternative feed sources.
All in all, the market situation for vitamins A, E, and carotenoids remains highly volatile. Low market liquidity has hampered price discovery as major players are cautious. Few suppliers are actively offering products, and the small amount of spot offers for vitamin E and vitamin A could result in price increases of about 30-60% from July levels or even higher.
Nutri Avenue predicts that prices for vitamin A and synthetic vitamin E will continue to jump in the future. For quotes for these two vitamins, please contact our sales team.

결론
This week, including the next few weeks, the raw material market for vitamin A and synthetic vitamin E will have a price jump trend. It was mainly because of the explosion at the BASF factory, which seriously affected the supply market.
Markets such as plant extracts, amino acids, and food additives remain relatively stable. There is no significant increase in quotations. You can focus on plant extracts, which have a high level of market activity.
