Resveratrol: Red Wine’s Weight Loss Ingredient

For more than five decades following its first isolation and discovery in 1939, explorations on Resveratrol and its many health effects remained stagnant. In the early years of the previous decade, however, interest on the compound began to rise not only in the medical field but also in the fields of biotechnology and culinary after it was mentioned in a 2003 Harvard Medical School report. There have been a lot of claims concerning the health effects of the compound Resveratrol and even in the absence of concrete clinical evidences, many experts from all over the world believe in the compound’s efficiency.

What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a natural phenol compound mostly isolated from grapes, mulberries and blueberries. It is said to be the prime component of red wine which is responsible for the many benefits associated with healthy red wine consumption. Although the compound can be taken from several food sources, Resveratrol supplementation within doctor-recommended doses is highly advisable to maximize health effects and promote overall health and vitality.

Health benefits of using Resveratrol

Since intensive studies on Resveratrol only began in the early years of the 21st Century, experts have not yet fully established the pharmacodynamics of the drug. Most claims on Resveratrol health benefits are based on independent quantitative studies conducted on animal subjects but due to proven safety of the compound, the following have been published in health magazines and articles as Resveratrol’s health benefits:

  • It may prevent heart diseases

Studies show that Resveratrol may play significant roles in maintaining cholesterol and LDL levels in the blood through oxidation control pathways. It was also suggested in a separate study that the compound prevents solid blood component clotting which prevents thrombus and embolus formation as well as myocardial infarction. Although not yet fully substantiated, there are also claims that Resveratrol may help reduce systolic blood pressure.

  • It has neuro-protective properties

Experts also claim that supplementation of Resveratrol, along with other phenols, may help protect brain cells or nerve cells from destruction and prevent development of degenerative brain disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The antioxidant properties of the drug helps eliminate toxins which form plaques and obstructs normal nerve impulse transmission in the brain. Long-term Resveratrol supplementation is associated with improvement in memory, concentration and overall intellectual capacity.

  • It may promote weight loss

Although not yet proven to be an effective weight loss agent on its own, several health supplements containing Resveratrol are shown to provide weight loss benefits among individual users after long-term use. Some experts say that the compound may synergize the effects of some other fat burn-promoting drugs and even reduce cholesterol levels, leading to weight loss.

Conclusion

Even within a very short period of time, Resveratrol health effects has been established and accepted widely in the field of medicine. With confirmatory human subject studies, the compound is most likely to receive approval from the US FDA.
