Supply Chain, Supplements for Bone Health in Sept 2022

Current Supply Chain Challenges in Sept.

As the foreign trade industry continues to grapple with the impact of supply chain constraints both domestically and internationally, there are many issues that have yet to be truly resolved. Below, we take a look at the current challenges facing China and the United States procurement.

From the perspective of the global environment, there are five active issues in Chinese procurement:

  1. The currency will affect the favorability of forwarding contracts. While this is something to monitor – don’t expect to see an immediate impact, given the current state of stock gluttony.
  2. The continued emergence of COVID-19 cases in China has intermittently affected the development of regional manufacturing and commerce.
  3. The Xinjiang Ukrainian Union ban, also simply called UFLPA, continues and has unintended consequences, which will interfere with other categories of goods. One commodity market that has been disrupted recently is chewing gum.
  4. Shipping cycle times are decreasing. For now, this can bring benefits to the supply chain in terms of prices, operating costs, replenishment cycles, and more.
  5. Natural resource supply and demand are adding additional pressure on procurement. Water, coal, and corn are the three drivers of our industry.

On the domestic front, there are generally 4 operational procurement issues that deserve attention:

  1. Discussions continue with West Coast Port Unions. With seasonal port activity busier than expected, businesses placing orders in advance can address potential import delays.
  2. Intermodal union negotiations are approaching a cooling-off period on September 16, when unions can strike.
  3. California’s AB5 exacerbates the national truck driver shortage by passing a law to classify independent drivers.
  4. The 301 Tariff List 3, released in September, proposed the relaxation of tariffs in China or a possible extension of tariffs.

This ever-changing externality drives the ecosystem and keeps even the most seasoned procurement professionals on their toes. Nutri Avenue will continue to monitor these changes closely.

New Feature: Mushrooms Ingredients

This year, related product launches for food, beverages, and supplements include many mushroom ingredients with functional claims.

In Asia, the lion’s mane is commonly used for culinary and medicinal purposes. In current Western markets, lion’s mane mushrooms have gained popularity as a functional health ingredient. While the term “lion’s mane” accurately describes this hairy mushroom, other common names include monkey head, mangosteen, and satyr’s beard.

The Bioactive Compounds in Lion’s Mane Mushrooms Have Many Benefits

Lion’s mane, which grows on old or dead hardwood trees, has been linked to brain health and acute cognitive improvement due to the following potent bioactive compounds:

  • Hericonenes AC-H
  • Erinacines A-K
  • Orcinol derivatives
  • Sialic Acid
  • Binding Lectin
  • Sterols
  • HEF-P polysaccharide

Lion’s mane is also great when cooking but requires the extraction of many beneficial compounds to increase its bioavailability. Double extraction, which is hot water and ethanol, is best because some active compounds cannot be extracted from Lion’s mane with water alone.

Supported by Multiple Studies

Most of the study about lion’s mane has focused on preventing cognitive decline. Here are some research highlights:

In one study, lion’s mane caused a significantly less cognitive decline in older adults with mild cognitive impairment compared to placebo treatment. The lion’s mane group showed a significant increase in the study at weeks 8, 12, and 16 of this trial.

Cognitive function scores were significantly higher than those in the placebo group. Scores in the lion’s mane group increased over time of intake but decreased significantly at week 4 after the 16-week intake was terminated.

Other studies have different highlights:

  • Improve menopausal symptoms, especially depression and anxiety
  • Demonstrated neuroregenerative properties in a mouse study treating nerve injury
  • Improve short-term memory deterioration

Why Start Developing Lion’s Mane-Related Products?

Lion’s mane works excellently with morning coffee and sleep supplements. Reports of improved attention and improvements in cognitive decline in clinical studies are effects over time, not acute. For this reason, administration time is not that important for this ingredient.

The Fast-Growing Supplement Industry: Bone Health

Joints, bones, and muscles have long been thought of as three distinct systems. Few natural products designed to support one system target the other. However, all three are associated with healthy aging, and there is a considerable crossover between them. For example, age-related muscle loss can lead to joint pain. Joint pain can lead to a lack of movement, which can lead to changes in bone density and muscle loss.

At the same time, the health and wellness market has grown at an incredible pace over the past year. In 2020, a Grand View Research report showed that the global women’s health market is expected to reach $47.8 billion by 2027. Rising awareness of nutritional needs among women and rising consumer willingness to purchase health and beauty supplements are expected to drive market expansion.

Obviously, as we all know, women experience unique health issues and concerns, such as pregnancy, menopause, and gynecological conditions like uterine fibroids, pelvic floor disorders, and so on. Many health problems only affect women, while others are more common in women. What’s more, it may be the same for men and women, but it affects women differently.

According to survey research by different agencies and official websites, such as the Healthcare Research and Quality Agency, CDC, etc., the following points are shown:

  1. Women are more easily to die than men of heart attack problems.
  2. Women are more easily to show signs of depression and anxiety emotions than men.
  3. Osteoarthritis (OA) affects women more than men.
  4. Women more easily face urinary tract problems because of how their urinary tract is structured.

Male and female consumers are increasingly turning to nutritional supplements as a means to supplement a healthy diet and exercise lifestyle to optimize health. As more elderly female consumers look to stay healthy and active and delay the onset of age-related degeneration and disease, supplements can provide support.

Related Research & Data: Focus on Bone Health

According to the “Condition-Specific/Aging” issue – Deteriorating Joint Health, published in the Nutrition Business Journal, the issue has caught the attention of nutritional supplement marketers responsible for new product development. NBJ research shows that supplements targeting joint health now account for about 4.5% of the U.S. supplement market.

Xavier Berger, Liquidity and Allied Health Marketing Manager at Gnosis by Lesaffre, observed a phenomenon with proprietary Innova Market Insights data showing that between 2017 and 2020, new product launches containing vitamin K2, such as menaquinone-7 The amount can be increased by nearly 60% every year. In comparison, dietary supplements account for the largest share of these new products – almost 75%. More notable, however, is the increase in functional foods and beverages as delivery formats, including sports nutrition powders, dairy products, and chocolate bars. The shift to more pleasant consumption of these products creates opportunities to reach a broader consumer base and grow the vitamin K2 and bone health categories.

In 2020, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed there exists other probability in addition to vitamin D3 being an integral part of bone health. That is, when D3 binds to Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methylbutyric acid (as myHMB) to use, it can be involved in building strength and enhancing muscle function. This effect is particularly pronounced in the elderly population.

New Product Launch: Consumer Demands for Bone Health

  • Après Flex

AprèsFlex is a patented synergistic combination product of two proprietary extracts derived from Boswellia serrata resin, launched in 2013. The oral bioavailability of AprèsFlex’s acetyl 11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) is significantly higher than that of other commercially available Boswellia extracts, allowing for lower daily doses and improved efficacy.

Often used as a stand-alone ingredient or in combination with other ingredients in joint health products, AprèsFlex powers some of the world’s best-known collective health consumer brands. Nowadays, AprèsFlex has been the main topic of seven preclinical studies and three published human clinical trials.

In addition to improvements in joint comfort and function, AprèsFlex has been shown to have positive effects on biomarkers related to joint health and inflammatory metabolism, including TNF-α, C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Both are they have statistically significant positive changes. It has also been shown to significantly inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-3), an enzyme that breaks down cartilage, collagen, and connective tissue.

  • Stratum

Studies of NEM, a component of Stratum brand eggshell membranes, have been incorporated into CTX-II to demonstrate the benefits of NEM in protecting cartilage from exercise-related degradation.

Traditionally, assessment of pain and stiffness has been the primary criterion used to determine the effectiveness of supplements aimed at improving joint health. The use of objective biomarkers associated with cartilage breakdown further supports the proven benefits of NEM for joint health. Research shows that protecting and preserving body parts that are often vulnerable to the long-term effects of exercise stress is a stark contrast to the short-term benefits often seen.
